The Breck Town Council recently met to discuss limiting short term rental licensing. There are currently nearly 4,000 short term rental licenses in Breckenridge right now. The Town Council is drafting legislation to limit the number of permits to 2200. If they agree to the language, this could go into effect November 2, 2021. They are saying the current Short Term Rental (STR) permit holders will keep their permits but as properties sell, permits won’t transfer and new owners will not be able to apply unless there are less than 2200 permits in Breckenridge. If you currently own in Breckenridge and have been thinking about short term renting but don’t have a permit yet, you had better get it now. Who knows when you will be able to get one if this passes.
There is a petition online you can sign to tell Breckenridge not to limit short term rental permits. To add your signature to the petition, visit change.org now.
There is an emergency meeting scheduled for tomorrow, August 31st. There is speculation that this meeting is to push through the STR agenda. If that is the case, it would push up the timeline significantly.
Currently this only impacts properties inside town limits of Breckenridge. It may, however, put pressure on neighboring areas within Summit County to do something similar.
