There has been a lot of negative press recently around the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) and, more specifically, the lawsuit and recent settlement. It is important to point out, at times like these, that NAR and the local REALTOR® Associations spend a lot of time in the fight for homeowner rights.
Lobbyists fight for homeowner rights
Lobbyist is a negative word in my opinion. It eludes to someone fighting for their best interests with the backing of a lot of money. While that may be true much of the time, NAR lobbyists spend a lot of time fighting for homeowner rights in housing bills.
Results of REALTOR® Associations fighting for homeowner rights
The political advocacy work is done largely behind the scenes. Preliminary bills are modified many times before making it to law. NAR has helped shape so many laws in the past with more to come. They range from capital gains rules, to mortgage fees, to landlord rights and affordable housing.
The local associations do a lot for the communities they serve too. Summit Realtors works hard to help with wildfire mitigation, affordable housing, short term rental issues and to make sure important information gets to their members.
A REALTOR® is a members
If a real estate agent is a REALTOR®, it means they belong to the National Association of REALTORS®. Members pay dues to local and national branches that help further these causes. As a REALTOR®, fighting for homeowner rights is part of the job.
As with most things, there is more than meets the eye with a REALTOR®. Strong ethics, community involvement, and homeowner and client protections are just a few of the things happening behind the scenes.
